The Future of Your Job and Credit Counseling

Written by on September 29, 2010 – 9:58 pm -

Searching for a job these days is a bit like credit counseling. You must first admit that you need help before the real healing can begin. The search for a job is no longer about how skilled you are. Unfortunately, it isn’t about who you know either. The key to finding a job in today’s market is about predicting the future. It’s about seeing the long term prospects of your job. These days that’s not an easy task.

For the longest time the United States supplied jobs in factories. The trade industry was the biggest industry going. You didn’t have to be college educated to get one of these jobs, you just had to be skilled. However, as the years went on, the outsourcing of these jobs made it so that unskilled laborers were no longer employable.

Recently there has been a reduction in jobs nationwide as computers are replacing people in all aspects of the work force, from automated call centers to self checkouts. The streamlining of business to make it more automated has left some in the unemployment line, and everyone scratching their heads.

Finding a job these days is difficult. It’s for reasons like this. There is no telling just where business is headed and how you pick a career that stays ahead of the trend. Jobs in the health care field are still stable sources of employment in most cases. However, with new insurance programs being implemented and the government lowering costs, there could be a layoff looming.

The key might be to find a career that deals with the development of The key might be to find a career that deals with the development of technology. It might be better to be developing the self checkouts and the software for the automated call systems, rather than be the person getting laid off. As technology develops it will be difficult to predict every trend, but your financial future will depend on trying to.

Thinking About Municipal Bonds

Written by on September 29, 2010 – 9:56 pm -

Yeah, I know. There are those big words again. ‘Municipal Bonds.’ You always hear this talk about people speculating in bonds. What does that mean? They say there is some ‘good money’ there, as if it’s the turn of the century and you were speculating for oil or gold. Well, these days you just have to be creative, and that’s what I’ve been lately. What are some creative ways to make money and stock wealth? It’s not my life goal to be rich, I just want to be comfortable and not have to worry, like anybody.

So as I did a bit of research, I started hearing about these anomalies with municipal bond defaults. Of course, you can’t know what a default is without first knowing what a municipal bond is, so I had to do even more research, which wasn’t bad. I had an open afternoon. As it turns out, cities or states sell bonds or stock in their assets to raise municipal money. The buyer – anyone like you or me – has to pay a certain amount of the bond, and the municipality promises to pay that money back, plus interest, over a predetermined amount of time. After all of the administrative and bureaucratic stuff is out of the way, that’s how it works out.

When the bond issuer (the city or state) fails to pay the buyer that money back, the municipal bond goes into default. The bond isn’t totally worthless, but rather, suspended. For some investors, however, these bonds are dead in the water, so they will sell these on a secondary market cheaply. Speculators buy these secondary municipal bonds, wait for the default to end, and then capitalize on their investments. I have the practical issues to work out, but the idea seems simple enough. What do you think?
