Mold Test
Written by on August 28, 2010 – 7:49 pm -As a parent of two grown up kids, I make sure that they are always in the best of health, there are times that I get paranoid especially with my youngest son who is kinda sickly. He has been hospitalized a few times already due to asthma, it is very hard seeing around a helpless kid catching on his breath. So I always make sure that our house is clean and free from dirt and dust. But still there are times that he would still get asthma attacks despite the precautions.
To really be sure, I am planning to buy a mold detector just to be so sure of any mold contamination inside our house premises. With the dirty air around us, no thanks to vehicles and other smoke causing irritants, we really have to be sure that the air we breath is clean to ensure a healthy and safe leaving. The test for mold that immunolytics offer helps you distinguished and finally get to identify those molds that gives you problems at home.
The mold test kit is easy to use as the process is simple, affordable and convenient. It will help you determine if a growth is harmless or potentially hazardous to health and you at the end could avoid the possible health hazards to the rest of your family. As they say, prevention is better than cure, so investing into such kind of device is somewhat an investment on your health part.
Healthy Benefits of Brocolli
Written by on August 28, 2010 – 5:09 am -Broccoli originated in Italy and it’s part of the Brassica family of cruciferous vegetables. Other members of the cruciferous family are cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy, kale, and Brussel sprouts, all with similar health benefits.
A cup of steamed broccoli (146 grams) provides a wide range of nutrients. These include 46 calories (won’t make you fat), 4.6 g. protein, 8.7 g. carbohydrates, 6.4 g. fiber, 178 g. calcium, 1.8 mg. iron, 50 mg. vitamin A, 0.13 mg. thiamin (vitamin B1), 0.32 mg. riboflavin (vitamin B2), 1.18 mg. niacin (vitamin B3), 0.9 mg. vitamin B5, 0.27 mg. vitamin B6, 90 mg. folate, and 98 mg. vitamin C (twice the recommended daily allowance).
According to the US Department of Agriculture, broccoli has more vitamin C than an orange and as much calcium as a glass of milk. One medium-sized stem has three times more fiber than a slice of wheat bread.
1. Beneficial especially for women. Broccoli contains phytonutrients, called indole and sulforaphane, which may help prevent breast cancer. Sulforaphane belongs to a class of molecules named isothiocyanates. These phytonutrients help block an estrogen metabolite that promotes breast cancer growth (specifically, the estrogen-sensitive type). Moreover, its folic acid content is good for pregnant women to prevent birth defects in the fetus. The large amount of calcium in broccoli may also prevent osteoporosis.
2. For protection against many cancers and cancer-causing substances. Dr. Paul Talalay, a professor of pharmacology and director of the Laboratory for Molecular Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, named his lab “Brassica,” which is the genus that includes cauliflower and broccoli.
Talalay and his colleagues discovered broccoli’s cancer-fighting substance called sulforaphane. Sulforaphane helps activate the body’s immune cells called helper T-cells, and may help the liver in detoxifying potential carcinogens like cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, drugs, and alcohol.
In addition, researchers at Tokyo’s Graduate School of Agriculture have discovered that sulforaphane can block the growth of melanoma, a form of skin cancer. This study was published in 1999 in the Nutrition and Cancer Journal.
Similarly, a study of Singaporean women exposed to high pollution levels showed that eating a diet high in broccoli and other cruciferous veggies conferred a 30-percent decrease in the risk of getting lung cancer. Another study in the Netherlands showed a 49-percent decline in the risk of developing colorectal cancer in patients who ate these vegetables.
Overall, when scientists at the World Cancer Research Fund reviewed 206 human and 22 animal studies, they found scientific evidence that cruciferous vegetables lowered the risk of developing cancers of the oral cavity, throat, stomach, esophagus, lung, pancreas, and colon.
3. For heart and cholesterol problems. Most vegetables are rich in fiber and thus help reduce blood cholesterol levels. Fiber also helps regulate bowel movement and is said to “cleanse” the intestines. In addition to fiber, broccoli has a high vitamin C and potassium content, which helps in normal heart function.
4. For weight loss. Considered a low calorie food, broccoli is an ideal vegetable for those on a diet. Each cup of steamed broccoli contains only 46 calories. The high fiber content of its stem (or spears) makes one feel fuller. For adults and children on a weight-loss program, steamed broccoli spears can be a healthy snack.
5. Antioxidants to boost the immune system. Broccoli is a unique vegetable because it contains several antioxidants, such as beta-carotene, vitamin C, and glutathione, which all benefit the immune system. Some people take in glutathione in supplement form, but some experts say that this may not be as effective as the natural form found in broccoli. Glutathione is said to work by helping the liver neutralize cancerous substances and pollutants, including mercury and lead.
6. For many other diseases. Aside from the health benefits mentioned, eating broccoli has been linked to the prevention and control of diseases, like Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and various cancers.
HOW TO EAT BROCCOLI
To get the most benefit, you need to choose the freshest broccoli. All parts of the vegetable, including the leaf, the flower (florets) and the stem, are healthy, although the whitish stem does not contain vitamin C.
Try steaming the vegetable instead of boiling it. Place the broccoli in a steamer over boiling water for five to seven minutes. The appearance of cooked broccoli should still be bright green in color. A pale and soggy broccoli means that it has been overcooked.
Another technique is to roast broccoli. You can put a little oil and season with calamansi, vinegar or cheese.
Research shows that the more cooking and processing done on vegetables, the lesser will be the health benefits be, in terms of the amount of active phytonutrients. This is true for most foods that grow naturally. That is why it is best to cook vegetables lightly.
According to the food pyramid, a healthy diet should consist of around two cups of assorted vegetables each day. Near the top of the list should be your broccoli and cabbage, which can be eaten several times a week.
Finally, a word of caution: For those individuals with low thyroid function (called hypothyroidism), you should avoid eating large amounts of cruciferous vegetables, because this can depress the function of the thyroid gland. However, those with high thyroid function (called hyperthyroidism) might benefit from eating broccoli.
Another possible effect of broccoli is gassiness. This can be minimized by simply adding garlic or ginger in your broccoli, thereby also getting the health benefits of both garlic and ginger.
In our list of healthiest vegetables, which include tomatoes, carrots, and malunggay, you now have another star. Protect yourself from the many carcinogens in the environment. Go ahead, eat your broccoli.

Handy Hubby
Written by on July 24, 2010 – 2:32 am -DH has been in the mood in going around the house-fixing things here and there, checking and keeping things organized. Managing the house is not easy and I’m glad that he is consistent in doing so. I do remind him at times to take things slowly because I noticed that he’s very eager to do all things all at the same time, just early this evening, he told me that he did the gardening this afternoon and got some callouses and which results to having bruises and sore hands. So I noted on my grocery list to buy him safety gloves once we pass by the handy store tomorrow. Being diabetic, I reminded him to take extra precautions because he might wound himself and it’s not good for diabetics as it would take sometime to heal their wounds.
10 Habits For a Healthier You!
Written by on June 10, 2010 – 5:25 am -1) Eat six small meals a day. Most nutritionists recommend that we eat six small meals a day. For example, you can have a light breakfast at 7 a.m., light snack (a banana or an apple) at 10 a.m., lunch at 12 noon, snack at 4 p.m., dinner at 7p.m., and bedtime snack (tea and cookies) at 9 p.m. This schedule will help reduce sudden surges in your blood sugar. It will also prevent you from overeating because of hunger. It’s easier for the digestion, too, and can prevent stomach ulcers from missed meals. Eat several times a day, but just a little. A banana or an apple can be considered a snack already.
2) Drink 10 glasses of water. Doctors have to tell patients again and again the importance of drinking enough water a day. But it seems many patients, especially women, don’t listen. Drinking water can prevent kidney infections, kidney stones, migraine headaches, and constipation. My wife, who only drinks three to four glasses of water a day, learned a painful lesson. She developed severe back pains from kidney stones. Now, she drinks a whole lot more. And did you know that water can prevent wrinkles and make your skin soft and glowing? Drink water for beauty, health, and long life. It’s the best advice, so take it.
3) Rest at least eight hours a day. Sleeping and resting is the best way to boost your energies. If you feel tired, take a 15-minute rest to replenish your strength. At night, try to go for eight hours of sleep. If you can’t sleep, just lying in bed and thinking happy thoughts can relax your mind and body, too. It’s not as good as sleep, but it’s the next best thing.
4) Climb one to two flights of stairs. Exercise for your health. Moderate exercise has been proven to prevent diabetes and obesity, and reduce arthritis. If your office is just on the second or third floor, use the stairs. It’s good for your heart and your joints. It also helps you get some exercise in between your work. As you grow older, try to avoid high-impact exercises like basketball and badminton. Swimming, taichi, walking, and climbing stairs are gentler for the body.
5) Live a clean life. By “clean” living, we mean not just physically clean. We should also try to avoid unhealthy behavior like smoking, drinking alcohol, using illicit drugs, engaging in risky sex, and gorging on fatty foods. Smoking kills. Alcohol destroys brain cells. You may have tried them, but it doesn’t get you anywhere. So why continue the habit? Avoid risky habits and prolong your life.
6) Be a veggie and fruit lover. You are what you eat. And the healthiest foods out there are vegetables and fruits. Green leafy vegetables, such as cabbage, pechay, kangkong, camote tops (talbos), and spinach, contain so many vitamins, minerals, and beneficial plant chemicals. Vegetables can prevent heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, bowel problems, irritable bowel syndrome, various bowel cancers, and kidney stones. Eat veggies every day.
For the healthiest fruits, we have bananas, apples, carrots, tomatoes, and citrus fruits. Bananas are rich in potassium, vitamin B6. and folic acid. Likewise, tomatoes have high amounts of antioxidants, including lycopene. Citrus fruits like suha (pomelo) and dalandan are teeming with healthy vitamin C.
7) Laugh 15 minutes a day. Laughter is, indeed, the best medicine. A study from the University of California Irvine College of Medicine reports that after watching a funny video, the viewers’ mood improved dramatically. Depression and anger dropped by 98 percent, fatigue fell by 87 percent, and tension was reduced by 61 percent.
What happens inside our body when we laugh? The level of stress hormones, called cortisol, decreases, and the good hormones, called endorphins, increase. Endorphins are natural substances in the body that make you happy and boost your immune system.
Be enthusiastic about your work. Choose a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life. Try to find ways to enjoy your line of work. A nurse’s job can be messy and tiring, but at least you are caring for someone. A secretary’s job may be just about setting appointments, but without her diligence, the boss would never be as successful. Be creative. Think long-term. What does your job really mean to you? An enthusiastic attitude can make a difference.
9) Have a lifetime partner. Statistics show that married persons live longer than single persons. If you have someone to share your burdens with, it will lessen your stress. Single persons living alone may have no one to attend to them in case of an emergency. To compensate for the lack of social support, single persons can acquire a circle of close relatives and friends.
10) Share your blessings. In President Bill Clinton’s book Giving, he explains the whys and the hows of giving. Give big or give small, and the benefits will come back to you. Similarly, Prof. Peggy Thoits’ study at the Vanderbilt University showed that people who volunteered and helped others had higher levels of happiness, self-esteem, and better physical health. If you want to receive P2,000 worth of health and happiness, try donating P2,000 to your favorite charity. Helping the poor and the sick will surely give you a different high. It may not make you live longer, but it can surely make life worth living.

It’s in the Genes?!
Written by on April 30, 2010 – 3:54 pm -There are times when DH teases me and says he already knew how will I look like when I reach the age of 60, and that would be my mom
and it includes the size as well according to him and from there I would threaten him that I will tell my mom about it. ahehe. Kidding aside, I don’t think its in our genes as some of her relatives are slim. It’s all about the lifestyle, we were so used to eating like there’s always a feast. Ahaha. Now that I’m in my thirties, I need to seriously find ways on how to lose weight. I’ve been reading this 7-dfbx reviews and is now hoping and praying that this will work on me.

Ouch!
Written by on April 26, 2010 – 10:37 pm -
My hips are terribly aching that I hardly can’t move around. I fell this afternoon from the stairs (5 steps) at the office, with my back first and then it suddenly felt numb and I got scared that I thought I broke my spinal. I couldn’t move for few seconds and when I slowly went up I suddenly felt a sharp pain on my left part of my hips. I was nearly in my tears when I can’t lift my left leg to the vehicle on my way home. Good thing the other passengers were kind enough to help me out. Worst scenario is walking from the Jeepney stop to our house. Now I have a valid reason to excuse myself from work tomorrow and added to that, tomorrow is Gabby’s 6th birthday. Just a cake blowing and a little celebration with my family. I hope and pray that my hips will be fine tomorrow or else I really need to go the doctor for a check up.
Failed Again
Written by on April 20, 2010 – 10:57 am -Losing weight is not really easy as you think it is. I must admit that I failed again on my quest in losing weight. The weekend chores have kept me so busy that I end up physically drained and exhausted that led me in eating up for two during meal times and just this morning I got two Malteasers pack from the fridge and bring it with me here at the office, munching it now while doing this entry.
I badly need to re-organize my priorities when it comes to losing weight or I’ll really end up buying new sizes for my clothes. I need to try out and tale a look at how effective this colon cleansing that a friend suggested me to try. Will have to study it first and we’ll see if it will work on me this time. I just hope it will, I really miss the good old weight as I browse my old pictures in the album, DH and kids are teasing me and kept on uttering how thin I was then. lol
Achy Breaky Body
Written by on April 17, 2010 – 2:46 pm -I am so glad that I am done with all my offline tasks for today, the kids are now in bed for their afternoon nap and so I need to hurry up to catch some sleep too. lol! Now I can feel the effect of the stress I’ve been through the past weeks. It’s been days that I noticed how sleepy and dead tired was whenever I am at the vehicle on my way home and I would easily fall asleep. It happened twice that I almost fail to go down from the vehicle as it went to far from my place already because I am sleeping. I can terribly feel the aches of my whole body and seems as if I already have rheumatoid arthritis because there are sharp pains on my joints and no amount of massage can ease the pain. I guess its time to get some rheumatoid arthritis treatments so that it won’t lead to any serious condition in the near future, or was it just part of the early signs of aging?
As they always say that older people are more prone to have such kind of sickness.
