How To File an Auto Insurance Claim

Written by on March 31, 2012 – 9:05 pm -

Getting into an auto accident is not only dangerous and stressful, but it can also raise your auto insurance quotes if you ever decide to switch providers. One way to help the process of filing a claim go smoothly and to ensure that your rates stay low is to have a specific guideline to follow. The better prepared you are, the easier filing a claim will be. If you or the other driver faces serious injuries, it may be wise to seek legal counsel. In addition, you should be careful of insurance fraud.

Remember, before you do anything, you should always make sure that you and the other driver are not hurt following an accident. Once you have assessed the situation and have made sure that you are not physically harmed, take care to follow these steps while in the process of filing a claim:

1. Understand Your Policy: This actually takes place before you get in an accident. You should already know what your policy covers before you are in an accident, so that the process will run more smoothly. You should also carry a copy of your policy with you in the car in case the other driver asks to see it. You should also ask to see their insurance information, or at the very least, they should read you the information while you write it down.

2. You Should Never Assume Responsibility: Do not assume responsibility for a collision before seeing an official report. It is very important to relay the facts truthfully, or to the best of your knowledge. However, what may seem like your fault at first may not be upon closer investigation by a claims adjuster.

3. Even if You Feel Fine, Get Medical Attention: Sometimes a person may feel fine immediately following an accident. But once the shock of the event and the subsequent adrenaline rush wear off, aches and pains will start to sink in. Even if you don’t get taken away in an ambulance, you should visit a doctor soon after your collision. Don’t take any chances.

4. File a Claim ASAP: This is the most important step of all, really. Immediately following an accident, you should take down the other driver’s information at the scene of the collision. This information includes driver name, license plate number, insurance information, etc. When you have determined that you are not hurt and are home safely, call your insurance company and relay this information to them. Sometimes a company will file the claim for you, and other times they may tell you how to proceed in filing it.

5. Be Honest: If you do file a claim, it is extremely important that you relay the facts exactly as you remember them happening, without missing any details. If you lie on a claim, or misrepresent the facts, you could face a termination of your policy, and have your claim denied.

After a collision, many insurance companies will want to use their own claims adjusters in order to assess any damages done to your car. In other cases, you may use your own. Before moving forward with a claims adjuster of your own, you should make sure that your insurance company doesn’t want to use their own. You should also wait for the adjuster to look at the car before you take it in to be repaired. Often times the repair shop you choose must also be chosen by your insurance company. Make sure to keep all receipts for the car repair, as they may be needed when filing a claim.

An Overhaul

Written by on August 21, 2011 – 9:15 pm -

… is what our van badly needs since it was submerged into the flood water years ago during the typhoon Ondoy. We haven’t tried to start it’s engine since then and it took so long before we decided to have it repaired because we are short on budget. Buying a new one is not a priority for we could not afford it even for the next two years, the educational and household expenses are on the top of our list as of this time. It was decided that we’ll just have it repaired to a nearby car repair shop and buy necessary car accessories like the car floor mats and have the seats upholstered for a brand new look, I think that will be it for the meantime.
